Seven Ukrainian cities are developing cycling concepts this year (press release)

Seven Ukrainian cities and towns – Zhytomyr, Kryvyi Rig, Mykolayiv, Myrgorod, Poltava, Ternopil and Cherkasy – have begun to work on the creation of cycling concepts. The work is being done according to German technique that has been used in cycling concepts of Bila Tserkva, Donetsk, Kyiv, Lviv, Kharkiv and Chernivtsi.

The cities have already passed the first stage of development: they have analyzed traffic flows, determined the most important destinations of cyclists and developed maps of cycling network. In the maps there are various types of roads – top-priority main roads (e. g. from home to work, from home to the shop etc.), minor roads and recreational routes (in parks and around lakes).

Currently the second phase is in process which involves development of bicycle parking systems and navigation signs, integration of cycling with public transport and planning of promotional activities.

Kryvyi Rig and Mykolayiv, as cities with great distances from residential areas to the center, are developing a bike-parking system for long-term storage near the key public transport stops, where you could leave a bike and take a tram or a trolley-bus. This must help relieve the streets of mini-buses and private cars.

Consulting of the cities is provided by the experts of Kyiv Cyclists’ Association who have experience of similar work in six Ukrainian cities.
